Abstract:
This lecture explores the transformative path of Wenzhou, a model of China’s private economy and post-reform urbanisation. Recognised for its rapid economic and spatial restructuring, Wenzhou exemplifies market-driven growth and entrepreneurial spirit. In recent years, however, the city has encountered challenges, including slower economic growth and industrial upgrading difficulties. Through an analysis of Wenzhou’s historical development and the crucial role of family-run enterprises and local initiatives, this lecture provides insights into the city’s unique urbanisation model and reflects on its shifting position within China’s broader economic landscape.
